The Latest Children’s Dental Health Survey …. why is the system failing?
The Children’s Dental Health Survey recently published by the Health and Social Care Information Centre says that:
- The most common reason for 5-9 year olds to be admitted to hospital is dental decay and often involves multiple tooth extractions.
- 20% of 12 & 15 year olds reported experiencing difficulty eating.
- More than a third of 12 year olds and more than a quarter of 15 year olds reported being embarrassed about their smile or laugh due to the condition of their teeth.
- Overall 58% of 12 years olds and 45% of 15 year olds reported their daily life had been affected by problems with their teeth or mouth.
This is all despite the fact that tooth decay and gum disease is 90% preventable. The preventative message remains unaltered ie. Eat fewer sweets and sugary drinks, brush teeth twice a day and visit the dentist regularly. The shame is that the message is not getting to the people who need it most.
